For ninety years the Catholic Herald has been one of the most highly respected Catholic journals in the world. Its role is twofold: to act as a forum for the discussion of every aspect of Catholicism, and to report and comment on world affairs generally.
The paper was founded by Charles Diamond in Ireland in 1888 as The Weekly Herald. Under the proprietorship of Diamond, who was inspired by Cardinal Manning’s zeal for social reform, the journal was a strong advocate for the material improvement of the working-classes as well as for religious and moral principles.
In 1893 the publication moved to England and editions were published in various cities. This microfilm contains the main London edition.
After Diamond’s death in 1934, the paper changed its name to The Catholic Herald and began to exert considerable influence in Catholic affairs generally, opening its columns to wide discussion of the many controversial issues in the church. At the same time it acted as a Catholic mirror to contemporary affairs, with particular emphasis on Christian events throughout the world. The high standards of journalism to which the paper adheres has given it a considerable world-wide reputation.
The Catholic Herald represents in general the progressive trend in Catholic thinking and therefore contains a great deal of interest to the student of comparative religion as well as Catholicism.
