A collection of working drawings covering the whole range of activity of two of the most influential Arts and Crafts designers and craftsmen. These drawings are essential reference material for those interested in this fascinating aspect of design history.
Ernest Gimson and Sidney Barnsley belonged to a generation of young architects drawn to the circle of Morris and Webb in the 1880s and 1890s. Imbued with the principles of the Arts and Crafts Movement they moved to the Cotswolds in 1893. Here, although they continued to practice architecture, they produced the magnificent furniture for which they have become famous.
Gimson also designed metalwork, plasterwork and embroideries; working drawings for these and other projects by associated craftsmen are included in the collection. The microfilm is accompanied by a 152 page booklet which provides a comprehensive catalogue of the drawings.
