Since its foundation in 1963 under the auspices of the Council of Europe, the British National Film Catalogue has published details of over thirty thousand films. It was originally intended as a record of British film production, but since 1968, it has recorded between two and three thousand non-fiction and short fiction films of all nationalities released in the UK every year. All non-fiction films (i.e. 95% of the contents) are classified and arranged by subject, with extensive cross references and indexes.
The subject classification (U.D.C.) covers a vast range of topics from every discipline.
