This collection will be of value to the student of nineteenth century religious thought and its antithesis, atheistic freethought. It will also be of interest to those social and political historians who see beyond the freethinking argumentation to the social revolution which most of the writers and publishers of this literature set out to create. Most of the militant British Freethought literature of the nineteenth century, particularly before 1880, was published in the form of pamphlets and periodicals – relatively few books were published. All the books in this collection (which is uniquely comprehensive) belong to the militant wing of freethought and are rare, some extremely rare. They will prove a valuable addition to the research materials of many libraries.
