Lincoln Cathedral Library Music Collection 17th – 19th Centuries

The Library of Lincoln Cathedral is fortunate in still possessing a collection of some 150 choral part-books in manuscript, dating from the Restoration to the end of the 19th century. These copies were made mainly by lay clerks, and contain the anthems and settings in everyday use in the cathedral. Each manuscript is a unique performing copy; compiled over a number of years from various primary sources and in response to practical demands. What makes the collection significant is the practise of examination by the Succentor, the deputy to the Precentor (the canon in charge of music in the cathedral). Each examination is signed and dated, enabling one to form a full picture of the development of the Anglican liturgy and of the changes in musical taste in one of the great cathedral establishments.

The earliest 17th century manuscripts are of particular interest for they show the manner in which a regional cathedral centre built up a new repertoire after the devastations of the Commonwealth. The examination dates allow us to trace the speed with which the works of Restoration masters such as Purcell, Blow, Humfrey, Greene etc. with their court origins were taken up at Lincoln and added to the works of the Tudor period by Byrd and Gibbons. The part-books are also an important source for local composers such as Cutts and Hecht and examination dates can also be useful in dating uncertain works by Purcell and others.

By the beginning of the 19th century many Tudor and Restoration settings had been replaced by works by 18th century composers such as Croft and Kent, and in general there was a decline both in the standard of composition, and (as recorded by various contemporary commentators) in performance as well. The 1850s however saw a revival in interest in church music lead by T.A. Walmsley and S.S. Wesley and this is clearly reflected in the changing pattern of the Lincoln part-books. But aside from their musical importance, these manuscripts are also significant social documents, evidence in the history of taste; in the later period they provide a stimulating counterpoint to Trollope’s portrait of the kindly Precentor Harding of “Barchester Towers”.

Further information on this Collection is to be found in A. Lindsey Kirwan’s “The Music of Lincoln Cathedral”, London, 1973.

Each manuscript from this collection is a unique performing copy of a choral part-book, signed and dated by the examining Succentor, deputy to the Canon in charge of music at the Cathedral. Due to its chronological nature, this series enables the researcher to build up an idea of how musical taste and liturgy developed at the Cathedral.
