This set of slides of the Cinemas in Britain exhibition (held at the R.I.B.A. Heinz Gallery February 23rd to May 5th 1996) traces the development of cinema architecture in Britain.

Arranged chronologically, the slide set (which follows the exhibition) begins by examining the earliest drawings of cinemas pre-First World War and the first British super cinema the Regent in Brighton designed in 1919 by Robert Atkinson. The Twenties are represented by one of the most versatile of cinema architects, George Coles. During the 1930s the Odeon chain was established under the direction of Oscar Deutsch and his cinemas are represented by drawings and photographs of examples at Harrogate (Harry Weedon), Woolwich & Muswell Hill (George Coles) and the flagship cinema in Leicester Square (Harry Weedon and Andrew Mather). A selection of highly coloured drawings by John Alexander and elegant but unrealised schemes by members of the Tecton Partnership are also included. The exhibition ends with the model and drawings of Erno Goldfinger’s Odeon at the Elephant & Castle from 1963, which has since been demolished.
