The Thompson-Clarkson Collection
This Collection is intended to represent the complete source materials of Thomas Clarkson’s “The history of the rise, progress and accomplishment of the abolition of the African slave-trade” (2 volumes, 1808). It was put together by Thomas Thompson (1776-1861), a pharmaceutical and manufacturing chemist of Liverpool, who was a lifelong member of the Society of Friends. He tried to collect some printed material, an autograph letter (or, failing that, at least a signature) and, where possible a portrait of every person mentioned in, the work.
The collection was made in four volumes. It was handed down through Thompson’s family until 1936 when three volumes were given to the Library of the Society of Friends. Volume Four has not been traced.
A manuscript index prepared by Thomas Thompson is included, the use of the staff at Friends’ House Library.
Much of the autograph material is in the form of letters to James Phillips (1743-1799) who was in effect the official printer for British Quakers. James Phillips’ son William took over the business, and William’s sister Frances (1777-1839) married Thomas Thompson; the firm’s archives were thus a ready source of material for his collection.

Chronological Bibliography of Anti-Slavery Tracts | |
25 | This is a chronological catalogue of printed anti-slavery pamphlets 1760-1855. It contains about 1,200 entries which average about 30 words each. It is in the form of about 300 unnumbered pages of typescript with emendations in ink and pencil. The entries are arranged alphabetically within years, by author’s name, name of institution or, where anonymous, by the first word of the title. Conjectural authors are given in many cases for anonymous pamphlets. There is no index. It was compiled by the amalgamation of several lists: 37 volumes of Slavery Tracts in the Friends House Library; other anti-slavery pamphlets in the Friends House Library; anti slavery pamphlets at the Anti-Slavery Society; the bibliographies of two theses on slavery by Patrick C. Lipscomb and Joyce Bin; and Ragatz’ Guide for the Study of British Carribean History 1763-1834. Washington D.C., 1932 |
